My first visit to the South of France, some years ago, I purchased a straw market basket that has become part of my everyday life and, of course, it travels with me back to France each time. Here in the states, it goes with me to my local grocery store, produce stand, carries Steve’s and my lunch to the office, holds mail from the post office and holds my files at the end of the week to take home.
After years of searching, I have finally found an importer for baskets like mine. These hand-woven baskets are made in villages in Morocco out of renewable palm fibers and provide employment at the local family level. Weaving baskets from palm leaves and water reeds ensures your baskets are durable and will hold up to heavy outdoor use and possible exposure to water. Their leather handles riveted onto the baskets guarantees years of use.
As seen in the April 2008 issue of Country Home Magazine.
These are the same baskets found in markets all over Europe. Each time I carry my basket, it reminds me of wonderful days in France. Even if you haven’t experienced the delightful Saturday markets along the Riviera, with a French market basket, you can have the feel of it.
